Cuomo won’t commit to cash relief for illegal immigrants

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Thursday refused to commit to providing state emergency cash instantly to illegal immigrants impacted by way of the coronavirus, citing Albany’s tremendous fiscal problem.

Cuomo has been asked Thursday about California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to provide $500 apiece to 150, 000 illegal immigrants in the Golden State barred from receiving help in the $2. 2 trillion stimulus package passed by President Trump and Congress.

“We’re looking into it but we have real financial problems,” Cuomo said when pressed on typically the polarizing issue.

Advocates slammed Cuomo for not backing undocumented immigrants typically the way Gov. Newsom is within California.

“CA outdoes NY over and over again. Cuomo has provided ZERO relief to undocumented immigrants,” NY Communities for Change said in a tweet.

Javier H. Valdes, Co-Executive Director involving Make the Road New York, said, â€? *********************************************************) is seriously outrageous that Governor Cuomo forbids to meet the urgent wants of immigrant New Yorkers. As our community members are disproportionately affected by this crisis plus left out of the government’s relief, the Governor continues to insist on austerity economics, shielding the billionaires from taxes when leaving immigrants on the the front lines at grave risk involving hunger, illness, and death.

“We demand a full recovery for all, which must include direct cash assistance from New York State that prioritizes the needs of undocumented people,” Valdes added.

Providing government support for illegal immigrants is a divisive issue perhaps in New York.

Cuomo and the state Legislature accredited a law last year allowing for undocumented residents to apply for a driver’s license. About 1 / 2 of New York voters defy ? rebel ? go against sb/sth ? disobey the policy, a Siena College poll in February found.

It is estimated that since many as 1. 2 thousand undocumented residents lived in typically the greater New York metropolitan location, according to a study by way of the Pew Research Center.
