Man busted for stealing coronavirus test sample from hospital

A California man was nabbed after he police say that he stole a coronavirus test sample from a hospital, according to a study.

Shaun Lamar Moore, 40, allegedly went to Sutter Davis Hospital in south Davis on Saturday, and stole a specimen being tested for the virus, news station KCRA reported.

Several hours later, the sample was discovered untampered in a shopping cart at a CVS Pharmacy, police said.

The transient was arrested Sunday on suspicion of burglary after an officer spotted him riding his bicycle across an overpass, the outlet said.

It’s unclear why Moore could have wanted the sample.

“It’s under investigation what the true motive is,” Davis Police Deputy Chief Paul Doroshov told KCRA. “We are exploring his mindset and any possibility that mental health played a role in this.”

The hospital wouldn’t comment on whether security policies were being reviewed in the wake of the theft, according to the report.

“We take this situation very seriously,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We are conducting our own internal investigation, as well as working closely with county officials and law enforcement on the matter.”
